Tips for Living in German Housing
Moving to Germany introduces new concerns from cultural differences to housing differences. While it is exciting and fun to learn and live in Germany, a few tips may help you to enjoy a more successful and trouble-free German experience. Use this helpful infographic for more information.
- Windows: Prevent mold buildup by airing out the house two times a day. Opening all windows throughout the house allows the house to “breath” and humidity to be released. Airing out after taking a shower and washing clothes is highly recommended.
- Squeegee: In order to prevent lime buildup in showers and bathtubs, use a squeegee to wipe away remaining water. In the event lime is present, use vinegar and citric acid to easily remove the buildup.
- Dishwasher: German Dishwashers are built very robust but the hard water can damage the internals. To avoid this, ensure the salt reservoir is always topped off to soften the water inside the dishwasher.
- Weeds/Hedges: To avoid damage to patio and balcony tiles, routinely remove the weeds from these areas. Additionally, avoid major trimming of hedges between the months of March through September. German law prohibits the major thinning of bushes during this time to protect bird species.
- Ants: Should you experience ants invading your property, an easy way to deter them from entering your home is through the use of baking powder. Sprinkle a “barrier” of baking powder around the perimeter of your home and you will quickly notice the reduction of ants.
- Doors/Keys: Remember that doors in German houses are meant to lock upon closure. Ensure you always have a spare key with you when shutting the front door of your house. A good tip is to keep a key with a trusted friend or neighbor.
- Garbage: Avoid overflowing garbage by remembering the garbage days. Garbage pickup schedules can be found at your local town hall or their online website by searching for “Abfuhrtermine”.
- Quiet Hours: German Law mandates quiet hours between 8:00 PM (20:00) and 7:00 AM (07:00) and all day Sunday. This includes loud music, cutting of grass, washing clothes in apartments, and vacuuming. Some areas additionally have quiet hours between 13:00-15:00 (1-3PM)
